Let’s be honest, no summer is complete without a splash in the pool or a visit to the beach. But if you wear a wig or hairpiece, just having a little fun in the water becomes a challenge. Should I swim with my wig on? Will it ruin my hair? What if it comes off? These are real concerns that can drastically change a relaxing day under the sun to feeling insecure and self-conscious in a matter of seconds.
]]>Let’s be honest, no summer is complete without a splash in the pool or a visit to the beach.
Does that mean you need to leave your head bare?
Unless that’s something you feel comfortable doing, the short answer is no! That’s not to say there aren’t any risks in taking your wig for a swim, but with proper preparation and care, it is possible to enjoy your favorite water activity without losing your wig style.
Now before we get into the fun stuff, there are two things you should consider:
Chlorine is a toxic chemical used in swimming pool to keep the water clean and sanitary. While useful as a disinfectant, it is a very harsh substance that can stretch out your wig and cause discoloration to the hairs on your wearable. Similarly, salt can do just as much damage. Overexposure to the mineral will leave your hair dull, brittle, and lifeless. Even with proper care and treatment, continuous exposure to these harsh substances will shorten the lifespan of your hair.
So with all things considered, If you still decide to wear your wig, then great! You’re ready for the next part.
Typical glue or tape may work on a regular basis, but not all will sustain the pressure from diving and jumping. To ensure that your wig and hairpiece is up for any situation, make sure to choose an adhesive that is water-based and water-proof. We highly recommend the Roll-On Adhesive and Adhesive Tape Strips. Feel free to use one or both simultaneously to ensure maximum security! Just remember, always make that the adhesive dries completely before you go into the water.
If you still have doubts on the effectiveness of your adhesives, try a swim cap for peace of mind. Depending on the type of water activity you engage in, accessories like hats, bandanas, headbands, headscarfs or turbans will also do the trick. Just be careful when removing your cap or any other hair product so that you don’t pull off your wig with it.

This is the time when the best might not be for the best. As we have mentioned earlier, overexposure to chlorine and salt will damage both synthetic hair and human hair. One way to combat the damage is by giving your wearable the care it needs. This involves cleaning and conditioning your wig or hairpiece thoroughly to get rid of all the harmful substance and replenish the moisture that was lost in the process. That being said, we still highly recommend using synthetic hair over human hair for two reasons. One, synthetic hair is lighter and holds its shape better when it gets wet. Second, they are much cheaper to replace.

Rising heat and humidity pose a big problem for many wig wearers during the summer. While some minor discomfort is inevitable, there are ways to make it through the day feeling beautiful and confident with a wig on.
Capless wigs are generally constructed with open rows of weft in the crown, back, and side to provide ventilation for the scalp. They're perfect for summer because they're lighter and more breathable than standard wig caps. Oh, and did we mention that they're also more affordable!
Apply baby powder to your scalp before putting your wig on. This will help soak up the dampness you might typically feel on your head without overdrying your skin.
Human hair wigs might be loved for their natural looks, but faux hair is the winner when it comes to enduring the summer heat. It's much lighter in weight and can hold up its style longer, making it the ideal choice for all-day comfort and appearance.

Before throwing your wig into the sink, try brushing out all the tangles first. Use a shampoo and conditioner designed for wigs to give it the proper cleanse and nourishment it needs without overdrying the fiber or hair. Remember, while keeping your wig clean is essential, don't overdo it. Washing it too often will makes your wig dry and brittle, making it more prone tangling.
Don’t just lay your wig on a flat surface to dry, place it on a wig stand or styrofoam head.
Using a regular hair brush will tear your wig cap and pull hairs out of your wig. Instead, try a wide tooth comb or a flat paddle wig brush if you're dealing with human hair. Start by sectioning strands of hair into more manageable parts, then start from the tip, gently work your way up to avoid the tangle from bunching up even more.
If you sleep with your wig on, consider investing in a satin or silk pillowcase for your pillow. Not only will this minimize the tangling, but it will also increase the longevity of your wig as well.
One of the most frequent complaints is tangling at the nape of the neck. One way to tackle the issue is by spot brushing periodically. It might seem like a tedious task, but trust us, you don't want it to accumulate into a bigger problem. Wearing silkier fabrics, a less bulky collar, or attaching some tracks in the back of the wig will keep those stubborn knots under control as well.

Synthetic hair has come a long way since then.

Synthetic hair has come a long way since then. In today's market, synthetic hair can look and feel just like human hair — one of the many reasons why it is still so widely used for wigs and hairpieces. There is, however, one minor inconvenience. When synthetic hair is exposed to intense heat, there is a high chance that it will frizz, kink, or even melt together. These are significant drawbacks for anyone who desires to have the full freedom to stylize their look. Thankfully, new technology allows manufacturers to create something better.
Introducing, synthetic hair that can withstand your curling iron!
Known as heat friendly, heat resistant, or heat defiant, this innovation is a dream come true. Now you can have all the benefits of synthetic hair, plus the styling versatility of human hair but without the hefty cost. Keep in mind though that heat friendly hair is not 100% heatproof, exposing it to a temperature higher than 350 degrees will severely damage the hair. So try not to leave that iron on your hair for too long and consider using a curling iron or flat iron with adjustable temperature.
Wonder what you can do with heat friendly synthetic hair? Check out this tutorial by Jon Renau on how your can style you synthetic wig:

The term “Remy” refers to the method used to gather human hair strands. From the time of collecting to the process of cleaning, dying, and creating wigs and other hairpieces, cuticles of the hair is preserved and aligned from root to tip in the same direction. The result from this time consuming process is a natural looking wearable with texture comparable to one’s hair.
Let’s be frank, Remy hair is not cheap to get. So what if "things" are intact and flowing the same direction, one would assume that any human hair will achieve the same effect. Well...this is true to an extent.
Non-Remy hair is usually treated with a silicone coating to make them super smooth. After some washes, this layer will eventually come off, leaving your hair feeling harsh and brittle. In contrast, Remy's unique technique gives their hair the lasting advantages of durability and natural feel of silky soft hair without the aid of any harsh chemicals.
There is also another advantage. When it comes to the tangled mess that can happen with wigs and hairpieces, Remy hair is much less likely to tangle and shed. What this means is that you get to keep your favorite hair much longer without going through the hassle to replace it.
Not all Remy hair is created equal. Remember that “Remy” only refers to how hair is gathered and processed, not the quality of the hair itself. So a Remy hair wig or hairpiece made with low-grade human hair is no better than a high-quality Non-Remy.
So what's your opinion on Remy hair? Share your thoughts with us below! Don't forget to follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook and share with us your favorite look.

Wigs usually come in three basic sizes: petite, average, and large. Typically, most people will fit the average size. However, if you want to get the perfect fit and avoid the hassle of returning your order, it’s always good to know the measurement of your head rather than second-guessing. Know your wig size with this easy 3-steps measuring guide to a perfect wig.
Also, keep in mind that like shopping for any wearables, sizes may vary slightly depending on the brand.
Tips:
Not all wigs are the same. Understanding their differences can help you make the informed decision for your specific needs.
When we say "construction," what this refers merely to is how the hair or fiber is attached to the wig. The attachment method can affect the look and performance immensely. Attachment methods like hand tied are great for styling versatility, and the look of a natural hairline, but hand tied products are also usually more expensive and extremely delicate. Alternatives to hand tied are lace front and monofilament. They're the cheaper options to go for if you don't mind their styling limitations. Note that some wigs may have a combination of some or all of the attachment methods.

Human hair is typically much more durable, expensive and requires more care and maintenance in comparison to synthetic hair, but that doesn't mean synthetic hair isn't any good. Not all shampoos and conditioners are the same. And if you’re wondering whether it is okay to use regular shampoo to clean your wigs or hairpieces, the simple answer is no. Yes, regular shampoo does perform its job as a cleanser, but unlike wig shampoo, it will also make the hair change color, deteriorate, and ultimately shorten its lifespan.
But don’t panic just yet! Although the damage might be irreversible, it’s still not too late to switch to the proper hair product. If your wearable hair is made from human hair, consider deep conditioning it to restore some of the moisture.
For best result, we recommend using the Revlon Texturizing Cleanser and Revlon Dual Conditioner, or BeautyTrend's special BT Herbal Cleanser and BT Herbal Conditioner.
Excessive washing will cause your wig and hairpiece to lose its natural shape, color, style, and ultimately shorten their lifespan. Conditioning too often can also leave your wearable hair limp and lifeless. That’s not to say you should never wash or condition your wigs and hairpieces. To maintain their optimal look and feel, only do it when it’s necessary.
Few factors determine how often you should wash your wigs and hairpieces:
So a good rule of thumb: when your wigs or hairpieces starts to look dull, feel coarse, or smells, it’s probably time to grab that shampoo and conditioner.
Human hair and synthetic hair requires different attention. The benefit of synthetic hair is that it is low maintenance. There is no need for restyling after every wash. But if you ever do find them losing their form, a few shake or brush should do the trick. Never use intense heat, even with heat-friendly synthetic hair, as the heat will cause irreparable fiber damage.
Human hair, on the other hand, loses their shape after some time. The good news though is that like the natural hair on your scalp, wigs, and hairpieces made with human hair can be restyled with heat applicators.

Hairpieces come in various colors, sizes, hair types, and lengths. The most important thing to consider when determining between a hairpiece or a wig is knowing how much coverage you want. If you have substantial or total hair loss where you want coverage that extends beyond the top area, hairpieces may not be your best option.
Toppers or wiglets are like mini wigs. But don’t underestimate these little guys! For anyone in the beginning to mid-progressive stages of hair loss, toppers are the perfect solution to disguise thinning areas or baldness of the scalp. They blend in perfectly with your existing hair and add extra fullness to your part. These little wonders are easy to use and more affordable than a full wig.
Best for:
3/4 Cap falls, also known as cap falls or half wigs, may look like wigs, but they are actually a type of toppers. Like all toppers, 3/4 cap falls provide coverage for targeted areas and add extra volume to your existing hair. So how is it different from regular toppers or wigs? Well, unlike most toppers, cap-falls provide length, giving you instant long hair without the waiting period. And unlike wigs, they do not cover your entire scalp. They are a great addition to almost everyone’s hair collection!
Best for:
Want voluminous hair? Then make sure to look for volumizers. Not only can a volumizer give you fullness in a target area, but it can also give you extra length, texture, and curls. This type of hairpiece requires a full head of hair to be securely attached. So if you are looking for a hairpiece that can give you both volume and coverage, consider toppers or cap falls instead.
Best for:
These add-ons are the newest thing in town! Like the name suggests, halo has a hollow top with hair hanging on a string that is shaped into a circle. These hairpieces come in a variety of length and style, some with bangs and some without. No clips, tape or glue required. Just slip the string onto your head to secure for instant length. Easy peasy!
Best for:
In addition to toppers, cap falls, and halos, we also have other hairpieces available at BeautyTrends to complete your look:
While these hairpieces do not provide hair loss coverage, they're a great addition to personalize your look.

These combs have one row of teeth that slides quickly and easily into your existing hair. They are usually used in conjunction with another type of hair attachments and is used in some hairpieces, half wigs and falls. Typically these hairpieces will incorporate pressure sensitive clips for a more secure wear. For a more secure fit, you can also insert bobby pins to the attachment as well.
Interlocking Combs
Another common type hairpiece attachment. These are commonly found in ponytails and updo hairstyles. This type of hair attachment is constructed with two combs, usually both slightly curved to one side. To secure the hairpiece, slide the combs under your existing updos and secure it by locking the combs together.
Claw clip
Also known as jaw clip or butterfly clip, this is another standard hair attachment method used with ponytails and updo styles. To apply, squeeze the clip together and release to secure.

Weaving/ Bonding
Hair weaving is a technique that integrates hair extensions to your natural hair. There are different methods of hair weaving, one of the most common types is called bonding. This technique involves the application of hair adhesives to attach wefted hair to your natural hair. This method generally lasts six weeks or less, depending on the type of adhesive used. With proper care, this method causes less damage to your hair in comparison to sew-in weaving.
Braiding
This type of hair attachment involves a collection of loose hair that is used to thicken up-dos, dreadlocks, cornrows, thick braids, or micro-braids. To use, braid the loose hair into your natural hair. It may sound like an easy process, but this technique actually requires skills and training to perfect.

The construction of a monofilament wig usually involves an open weft and a sheer material known as “monofilament” that gives this type of wig the significant advantage over other traditional wigs. The transparency of the mesh reveals your natural scalp for the most natural look possible…with the bonus of it being super lightweight, soft, and breathable!

Not all monofilament wigs are the same, but that doesn’t mean any are less superior than the other. The three most common monofilament construction types are monofilament top, monofilament crown, and monofilament part. All these extra words after “monofilament” merely mean where the monofilament construction is located on your wig.

Unlike traditional wigs, lace front wigs are light weighted, comfortable, and natural looking if you wear it correctly.
As the name suggests, lace front means that a sheer lace panel is only in the front part of the wig. With a high-quality lace, it can seamlessly blend with your skin tone and give off the impression of a natural scalp.
In addition to the lace, strands of hair or fiber are also manually tied into the lace to give the illusion of natural hair growth. Want to know more about this hand tying process, check out our recent article on hand-tied wigs.
To create an even more realistic look, some manufacturers would attach baby hair onto the wig to help hide the lace!

Hand-tied wigs can be made with human or synthetic hair, but the process of attaching the hair or fiber to the cap are the same. Skilled wig makers would spend hours manually tying individual strands of hair fibers to a soft mesh cap. Depending on the craftsperson’s levels of experience, the process can take up to three days to finish.

This labor-intensive process may be time-consuming, but the result is worth it. For starters, hand-tied wigs offer the appearance of natural hair. Unlike their machine-made counterpart, there are no wefts, which means that no one would be able to tell that it’s a wig even up close!
Second, it provides the most natural hair movement, giving you the freedom to stylize your hair just the way you like. Feel like parting your hair a certain way or putting it into a high ponytail? No problem. With a 100% hand-tied wig, your options are limitless.
Lastly, and most importantly is the comfort. With no seams or wefts, hand-tied wigs are incredibly soft and lightweight, keeping your head fresh and ventilated all day.

Hand-tied wigs come in variations, such as monofilament or lace front wigs that combine hand-tied construction to different techniques to achieve particular results.
